Get the most from a mock test.

A mock test is only as useful as what you do with the result. Four habits turn a score into a plan.

  1. 1

Make it feel like test day

Sit the whole paper in one go, with the timer on and your phone in another room. The point is to find out how you do under real conditions.

  2. 2

Answer the way the test wants

Spelling counts, word limits count, and a correct idea in the wrong form scores nothing. Read every instruction, every time.

  3. 3

    Review by question type

Do not just count your mistakes. Note which question types cost you marks, because that is where your next week of practice should go.

  4. 4

Leave a gap before the next one

Spend a week or two on your weakest question types, then take a different paper. Repeating the same paper soon after mostly tests your memory.

Questions.

Q1Are these official IELTS tests?

No. They are original papers written by LEAD Linguistic to follow the IELTS format: the same timings, number of questions and question types. They are not official IELTS materials.

Q2How is my band worked out?

Your raw score out of 40 is converted to a band using commonly published conversion tables, one each for Listening, Academic Reading and General Training Reading. The result is an estimate, because the exact score needed for each band varies a little between real test versions.

Q3Why does the Listening test use a computer voice?

The recordings are read aloud by the voices built into your browser and device, so they sound different on a phone, a laptop or another browser. If your device has no English voice, you can read the transcript instead and still answer every question.

Q4Can I stop and come back later?

Yes. Your answers are saved in your browser as you go, so a refresh or a lost connection does not lose your work. Use the same browser and device to carry on.

Q5What about Writing and Speaking?

They are not marked automatically, because a fair band needs a person. Practise them with the free writing tasks and speaking questions, then message us if you would like a teacher to look at your work.

Want a person to look at it?

Free practice shows you where you are. A teacher shows you what to change. Message us and someone from our team replies, usually the same day.
