Which IELTS do you need?

There are two versions. The one you take depends on what the test is for, so check before you book.

What the bands mean.

Each skill gets a band from 0 to 9, in whole or half bands. Your overall band is the average of the four, rounded to the nearest half band. The descriptions are our short summaries.

6.256.5

6.757.0

6.16.0

An average ending in .25 rounds up to the next half band, and one ending in .75 rounds up to the next whole band.

Is it time for IELTS yet?

Your general English level is the best clue to the band you can aim for now. If your level is below about B1, building your general English first tends to lead to better IELTS results.

  • Your level A1 and A2 Likely band today: Not yet Build your everyday English first. IELTS practice at this stage mostly measures what you have not learnt yet. Where to start: General English
  • Your level B1 Likely band today: Around 4.0 to 5.0 You can start learning the format, but grammar and vocabulary work will still move your band the most. Where to start: General English, then IELTS
  • Your level B2 Likely band today: Around 5.5 to 6.5 A good time to prepare seriously: strategy, timing and feedback on your writing and speaking. Where to start: IELTS preparation
  • Your level C1 Likely band today: Around 7.0 to 8.0 Preparation is about precision: the small errors and habits that hold a strong candidate back. Where to start: IELTS preparation
  • Your level C2 Likely band today: Around 8.5 to 9.0 Mostly familiarity with the format, so nothing on test day comes as a surprise. Where to start: A few full mock tests

A rough guide, the same one the free level check uses, not a conversion table. Speaking and writing can pull a band up or down.

About 20 minutes. Your result shows a likely IELTS range from B1 upwards.

How preparation works with us.

Practice on your own is useful. Practice with someone who reads every line and tells you what to fix next is faster.

  1. 1

    We start from your level

Your level check result and your target band show the size of the gap. That decides whether you start with IELTS or with English first.

  2. 2

You practise in the real format

Timed papers with the same question types and timings as the test, so test day feels familiar.

  3. 3

Your writing and speaking get feedback

A person reads your essays and listens to your answers, then tells you exactly what to change next.

  4. 4

    The plan fits your date

We look at your exam date and your timetable and suggest a realistic pace. We never promise a score.

Good questions.

The things people ask us before they start IELTS preparation.

Q1Do you provide IELTS preparation?

Yes. We coordinate IELTS preparation for both Academic and General Training, covering Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking. You can also practise free on this website with our original IELTS format mock tests and games.

Q2Do I need IELTS if I want to study abroad?

Often, but not always. Many universities accept IELTS, and some accept other tests or evidence such as previous study in English. Requirements vary by university, course and country, so always check the specific requirement. LEAD Counseling can help you confirm it.

Q3What is the difference between IELTS Academic and General Training?

Listening and Speaking are the same in both. Academic Reading and Writing use academic style texts and tasks and are generally used for higher education and some professional registration. General Training uses everyday and workplace texts and a letter writing task, and is often used for work and migration purposes. Check which one your institution or route asks for.

Q4Can I prepare for IELTS if my English level is currently low?

Yes, but usually not straight away. If your level is below about B1, building your general English first tends to lead to better IELTS results. We will tell you honestly where to start.

Q5How long does IELTS preparation take?

It depends on your current level, your target band and how much time you can study. Moving up half a band often takes weeks of focused work, and a full band can take months. After your assessment we can give you a realistic plan, but we never guarantee a score.

Q6Are your mock tests official IELTS papers?

No. They are original practice papers written by LEAD Linguistic to follow the IELTS format, with the same timings, question counts and question types. The band you see at the end is an estimate, not an official result.
